Allegheny Health Network Named 2024 “Top Workplace” by Becker’s Hospital Review Magazine

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has been named one of the country’s “150 Top Places to Work in Healthcare” by Becker’s Hospital Review, a national health care trade publication. AHN is the only organization in western Pennsylvania to receive the honor.

The health care organizations featured on the 2024 list actively cultivate employees’ professional and personal development, offer wellness benefits that address whole-person health, and provide opportunities for team members to give back to the community. The list also celebrates institutions that actively push for diversity in the workplace and promote a healthy work-life balance.

“As the national workforce shortage continues, attracting and retaining top talent is more crucial than ever for hospitals, health systems and health care companies,” the magazine noted. “Organizations that foster employee growth, value and respect their voices, offer workplace flexibility and provide generous benefits see improved employee satisfaction rates.”

AHN was recognized for its innovative workforce recruitment and retention programs, including its “Work Your Way” lifestyle initiative, which promotes weekend and casual work schedules; its mobile internal nursing team, which allows nurses to float between different AHN hospitals; and its new digital nursing team, which perform a variety of intake and discharge duties remotely, freeing bedside nurses to focus on clinical caregiving rather than administrative work.

AHN has also invested heavily in its workplace and clinician wellness programs over the last three years.

“Employee retention at AHN has improved dramatically over the last two years, with team members reporting increased job satisfaction and reduced burnout rates,” the magazine said.

In 2023, for the fifth straight year, AHN also was named one of America's Best Employers by State by Forbes. And in March 2024, AHN raised its minimum starting wage to $18 per hour – the first health care organization in Western Pennsylvania to hit that benchmark.

The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team assembled the list by reviewing nominations and assessing rankings and awards from reputable organizations such as Forbes, Newsweek, “Great Place to Work” and Fortune. The full list can be read here.

“AHN is honored to be recognized as one of America’s top health care workplaces by Becker’s,” said James Benedict, president, AHN. “We’ve worked hard over the last several years to build a just culture that is supportive of our team members’ needs, including wellness, flexibility and career opportunities for physicians, residents, nurses, and everyone else who helps us fulfill our mission. We know our caregivers do their best high-quality work for the patients we serve when they are engaged and working in an organization that creates an environment of quality, safety, and career fulfillment.”
