About the Program

Program director: Marcia Klein-Patel, MD, PhD
Accreditation: ACGME
Program length: 4 years (PGY1-PGY4)
Residents per year: 5

I would like to thank you for your interest in the Allegheny Health Network’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program and its long tradition of academic excellence as well as outstanding care and service to the Pittsburgh communities.

The Allegheny Health Network (AHN) was formed in 2013 from a partnership between the largest insurance provider in western Pennsylvania (Highmark) and a large 5 hospital system, the West Penn Allegheny Health Network. As the only integrated delivery network in the country formed between a large insurance company and a hospital system, Allegheny Health Network is uniquely positioned as a leading innovator of health care delivery and a champion of health care efficiency, education and excellence both regionally and nationally.

The Allegheny Health Network currently consists of 8 hospitals, 4 Health and Welness Pavilions, as well as 2 academic medical centers in Pittsburgh, West Penn Hospital and Allegheny General Hospital. AHN currently employs over 1700 people and over 2000 physicians. The network includes 2 nursing schools, the only regionally accredited breast cancer center, an exclusive cancer partnership with Johns Hopkins, multiple certified trauma units, a nationally recognized burn center, 3 stroke centers, the only radiation oncology center in western PA certified by the American College of Radiology, and is the teaching campus for Drexel and Temple Medical Schools.

West Penn Hospital obstetricians have been national leaders in medical education since John M. Duff, MD, Professor of Obstetrics at West Penn along with 12 West Penn physicians founded the Western Pennsylvania Medical College on October 5, 1885. In the spirit of their tradition, West Penn Hospital provides excellence in maternal and infant care for over 4000 births annually, and the 45-bed Level III NICU at West Penn is a major regional referral center for sick newborns, admitting many hundreds of ill newborns annually from western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. The West Penn Hospital serves as the primary teaching site for our residency program accounting for over (90%) of the resident experience.

In addition to the training program at West Penn Hospital, our Department includes over 120 physicians and 6 midwives that provide care throughout western PA at 44 different practice locations and 6 Labor and Delivery units caring for over 8200 deliveries and over 6500 surgeries. In addition, the Department includes over 25 OBGYN sub-specialists that provide care at 14 different satellites and include Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertiliy, Midlife Care, Family Planning, Adolescent Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Gynecology.

As a network and as individual hospitals, we annually receive numerous recognitions for excellence including Magnate recognition, a top 100 women’s health program by Becker’s Hospital Review, a top 50 women’s hospital by US News and World Report, as well as recognition by the March of Dimes, Best Doctors and Blue Cross National for excellence in quality. Our research is second to none with several prominent resources, including the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) that coordinates more than 6,000 medical professionals in the study of breast and bowel cancer treatment and prevention and our Allegheny-Singer Research Institute, founded in 1913 with a major emphasis on translational research. Some of the NSABP's most prominent research in breast and colorectal cancer care has been conducted at Allegheny General Hospital.

Our Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program, based at West Penn Hospital, is a fully accredited, four-year training program that enrolls five residents in each academic year. Residents receive extensive training in a structured educational environment in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology as well as primary care, and they graduate with a strong knowledge base and the clinical/operative skills necessary to practice independently, competently and compassionately.

The departmental curriculum has been developed in compliance with the special requirements of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) and the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG). Our residents are educated through a structured program of clinical experience and didactic training covering the essential concepts of OB/GYN. This educational experience has been designed around the Core Curriculum in Obstetrics and Gynecology as formulated by CREOG and is geared around the core competencies of medical knowledge, patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning, professionalism and systems based care.

Our faculty and staff are committed to creating an educational environment that will help you acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and professionalism that are necessary to the successful practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Residents are given increasing levels of responsibility, appropriate supervision, formal instruction and a comprehensive didactic program in order to achieve their goals and elicit the best from each individual.

We invite you to visit our department and explore the many opportunities that our program has to offer.

Thank you for your interest in our training program.

Allan S. Klapper, MD
Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology
Allegheny Health Network

From the residency program director:

As noted by Dr. Klapper, our program has a long standing history of outstanding clinical care, robust commitment to teaching and a comprehensive training experience.  Our curriculum includes training in high risk obstetrics, oncology, minimally invasive surgery (including robotics certification), urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology, family planning, and menopausal medicine, in the setting of a large culturally diverse patient population.  Additionally we provide rotations with our excellent aligned faculty in family medicine, emergency medicine, neonatal intensive care and breast disease.

Our program philosophy is:

Teach each resident to become a compassionate, supportive, competent and ethical physician
Provide increasing levels of responsibility, appropriate supervision, formal instruction, counseling and critical evaluation for each resident while never losing sight of each resident’s individuality

We achieve these goals through both formal and informal teaching opportunities.  Our comprehensive curriculum emphasizing outpatient and inpatient experiences through our rotations, research opportunities, and guided self-learning.  We provide gradated levels of responsibility throughout training with obstetric and gynecologic operative experiences starting at the PGY-1 level.  At our institution, all cases and deliveries are available for teaching purposes.

At West Penn Hospital, we are also focused on resident/physician wellness.  We host an annual mentor mixers, team-building events at our of campus conference, regular chair and program director rounds, as well as taking part in ACOG wellness week.  Our benefits are competitive and we provide professional liability insurance, educational seminars and scholarly materials, paid time-off during years 2-4 for conference attendance, complimentary parking services, on-call living quarters and meal allowance, flexible benefits (including health care, dental, life insurance), three weeks paid time-off (plus time off at winter break), and a board review course for the PGY-4 residents.

We welcome the opportunity to share our program with you and look forward to hearing from you.
