Stroke Symposium

Stroke Symposium

The Comprehensive Stroke Center at Allegheny General Hospital will sponsor a stroke symposium on Fri, Nov 11, 2011.

Stroke symposium

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and results in significant disability and healthcare expenditures. This conference is intended to bridge the professional practice gap among the greater Pittsburgh medical community with regard to acute stroke intervention, stroke prevention, telemedicine technology and stroke research initiatives to improve patient outcomes.
At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • describe rapid and safe delivery of IV thrombolytic therapy; select candidates for intra-arterial therapies; review outcomes of IV t-PA and intra-arterial therapy cases

  • detail neurosurgical interventions in ischemic stroke; discuss management of arteriovenous malformations and intracranial aneurysms; assess trends in intracranial and subarachnoid hemorrhage management

  • compare current multi-center clinical trials in stroke, discuss combined IV and intra-arterial therapies in acute ischemic stroke, describe investigational use of t-PA in intraventricular and intracerebral hemorrhage; describe insulin resistance toward recurrent stroke prevention

  • implement guidelines for the management of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage and acute ischemic stroke; address controversial issues in the critical care setting; implement strategies for bedside nursing issues in the ICU

  • assess modifiable risk factors and employ management strategies; implement optimal secondary prevention to minimize stroke recurrence; implement latest nursing and rehabilitation guidelines for stroke care

  • describe features of patients at high-risk of undetected paroxysmal atrial fibrillation; specify diagnostic tools used to identify paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in stroke; select among current treatment options for patients with stroke and atrial fibrillation

  • describe telemedicine technology and remote physician presence for bedside stroke care; assess telemedicine video conferencing capabilities; specify telestroke implementation successes and challenges

The conference is intended for anyone interested in the acute treatment and long term management of stroke.
