Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, occurs when your heart muscle doesn’t pump blood as well as your body needs. The disease may cause you to become short of breath, tired and unable to do normal activities like walking, climbing stairs or taking a trip to the store. A complete blockage could cause you to have a heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction.
Various conditions lead to heart failure – from cardiomyopathy or narrowed arteries to diseased heart valves or congenital heart defects. And although it is a serious disease to have, many people still live active, healthy lives with proper treatments, medication management and lifestyle changes.
