From its inception in 2002, The Heart Institute at Jefferson Hospital has received top honors and awards from national healthcare ranking organizations, healthcare insurance companies, and medical professional societies – including HealthGrades,® Press Ganey,™ and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. These recognitions underscore the consistently high quality of care we offer to patients with complex surgical needs.

Jefferson Hospital is the First in Pennsylvania to Earn AHA Mission: Lifeline® Heart Attack Receiving Center Accreditation

Jefferson Hospital’s exceptional care for heart attack patients has earned it the designation of an American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Heart Attack Receiving Center. Jefferson is the first healthcare facility in Pennsylvania to achieve this distinction.

The accreditation, effective through July 15, 2016, recognizes hospitals who have demonstrated expertise in meeting and exceeding established medical standards to treat the most serious form of heart attack known as STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction). The American Heart Association and Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care developed the accreditation. The cardiac care team at Jefferson Hospital is comprised of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, Emergency Department physicians and other members of the medical staff, EMS personnel and support staff.

To earn Receiving Center status, the team was required to meet and exceed established standards for the amount of time - 90 minutes - between the arrival of a heart attack patient at the hospital, to the time he or she receives angioplasty, thombectomy or stenting, life-saving procedures for reopening blocked arteries.

Each year in the United States, nearly 300,000 people experience a STEMI, which occurs when a blood clot completely blocks an artery to the heart. It is critical to their survival and recovery to immediately restore blood flow, either by mechanically or surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.
