Nursing 202: Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing focuses on the application of the nursing process in the care of adults and families with complex health impairment.  Primary content emphasis is on advanced endocrine, fluid and electrolyte, immune, oncology, and renal disorders.  Diagnostic studies, pharmacology, nutritional concepts, and evidence-based practice are integrated throughout the course.  Simulation exercises such as oncology and endocrine emergencies and fluid volume complications; enable students to practice assessments, perform interventions, develop critical thinking skills, and evaluate the effectiveness of their interventions.  Concurrent clinical experience is provided in the medical-surgical and telemetry units of the hospital.

  • Nursing 101
  • Nursing 102

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate ability to transfer theoretical concepts to practice.
  • Apply concepts of critical thinking in the application of the nursing process to facilitate the adult toward a state of system stability.
  • Utilize principles of therapeutic communication.
  • Function as a contributing member of the interdisciplinary team.

Expected Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the nursing student should be able to:

  • State rationales for the nursing interventions.
  • Implement safe and effective care throughout the nursing process.
  • Satisfactorily prepare patient for procedures and care.
  • Report patient information in a concise and timely manner to the appropriate healthcare team member.
