Allegheny Health Network hospitals earn top ‘A’ safety grades from The Leapfrog Group
PITTSBURGH, PA — Five Allegheny Health Network (AHN) hospitals have earned the highest possible “A” grades in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2026 Hospital Safety Grades, a national recognition of excellence in patient safety and quality care.
In Leapfrog’s most recent report, AHN’s Wexford, Allegheny Valley, Canonsburg, Jefferson and West Penn Hospitals all received “A” grades, placing them among the top-performing hospitals in the country when it comes to protecting patients from harm.
“These ‘A’ grades reflect our unwavering commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care in every community we serve,” said Mark Sevco, president of AHN. “Across our network, our teams are deeply focused on continuous improvement, transparency and accountability. This recognition affirms the culture of safety we’ve built, where every patient can feel confident in the care they receive.”
The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving patient awareness of health care quality and safety. Updated and published each spring and fall, the Safety Grade report assigns hospitals across the country an A, B, C, D, or F grade based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other harm to patients under their care. Grades are assigned to nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals.
In addition to the latest “A” grades, AHN Wexford and AHN Allegheny Valley Hospital have achieved a “Straight A” designation, an accomplishment earned by only about 15% of hospitals in this grading cycle. The designation means that a hospital has sustained an “A” grade for five or more consecutive grading rounds.
AHN Wexford Hospital, serving Pittsburgh’s North Hills, opened to patients in September 2021. This marks the fifth grading period the full-service hospital has been eligible for a Leapfrog grade, continuing a strong track record of safety performance.
“From day one, our goal at Wexford has been to build a hospital where safety is foundational to everything we do,” said Allan Klapper, MD, president of AHN Wexford Hospital. “Earning another ‘A’ and achieving Straight A status reflects the dedication of our staff and their commitment to delivering exceptional, patient-centered care every single day.”
AHN Allegheny Valley Hospital, a 166-bed acute-care hospital, has served Natrona Heights, Tarentum and surrounding communities for more than a century. In 2024, AVH completed a $12 million expansion and renovation of its imaging and radiology department, including a new 8,000-square-foot imaging center with advanced diagnostic capabilities.
“Allegheny Valley Hospital has a long-standing legacy of caring for its community, and this recognition speaks to how we continue to evolve while keeping patient safety at the forefront,” said Mark A. Rubino, MD, president of AHN Forbes Hospital and AHN Allegheny Valley Hospital. “Our investments in technology, infrastructure and clinical excellence are all designed to ensure safer, more effective care for every patient we serve.”
AHN West Penn Hospital, AHN’s flagship for women’s and infant care, is home to a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and AHN Women’s Behavioral Health. It is also a leading provider of stem cell transplantation therapy, gynecologic oncology treatment, care for autoimmune diseases, and burn care.
AHN Jefferson Hospital, a 341-bed full-service hospital serving the Mon Valley and surrounding communities, employs more than 1,600 AHN team members. It features one of the busiest emergency departments in southwestern Pennsylvania and a nationally recognized labor and delivery program.
Located in North Strabane Township in Washington County, AHN Canonsburg Hospital is a 104-bed full-service facility with a 120-year legacy of caring for area residents. The hospital offers a comprehensive range of services including cardiovascular care, cardiac rehabilitation, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, critical care, inpatient rehabilitation, and emergency care.
“These results demonstrate the strength of our systemwide approach to quality and safety,” said Ezz-Eldin Moukamal, MD, chief quality officer for AHN. “We are continually refining our processes, investing in our people and leveraging data to drive better outcomes. Ultimately, it’s about ensuring that every patient, at every AHN hospital, receives the safest care possible.”
