AHN West Penn Hospital Unveils $50 Million State-of-the-Art Radiology and Imaging Center
New Facility part of $400 Million AHN investment in advanced imaging technology and services to enhance diagnostic care and patient experience
PITTSBURGH – Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today celebrated the completion and formal opening of a new, state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging center at West Penn Hospital. The $50 million 46,382-square-foot facility is equipped with industry-leading technologies for diagnosing and treating a wide range of health issues. The significant investment elevates West Penn’s ability to deliver cutting-edge diagnostic care to the community.
"This project demonstrates our commitment to providing innovative care solutions and an exceptional patient experience," said Brian Johnson, MD, president of AHN West Penn Hospital. "High-quality imaging and radiology services are essential to the management of health issues across every medical specialty, forming the foundation for accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans. This investment significantly enhances our ability to deliver comprehensive, integrated care, which ultimately leads to better outcomes for our patients."
Led by board-certified radiologists and staffed by specially trained technologists, nurses and support staff, the new center provides a comprehensive range of imaging services, including X-ray, general and vascular ultrasound, interventional radiology, CT, MRI, PET/CT, and more.
The center features a 3T MRI, which provides enhanced clarity, contrast, and faster scan times. The technology allows for detailed visualization of brain tumors, precise stroke detection, and sensitive assessment of neurodegenerative diseases, facilitating earlier diagnosis and treatment planning for neurological conditions and cancers.
The new PET/CT machine facilitates earlier detection and more comprehensive evaluation of heart disease, cancer, and other conditions, while also supporting increased patient throughput.
AHN and Highmark Health have invested approximately $400 million over the last 5 years to enhance its radiology and imaging capabilities, and to expand patient care capacity across the region. Most recently, AHN Allegheny General Hospital completed a $100 million renovation of its imaging and radiology department.
"These new capabilities at West Penn mark yet another significant expansion and enhancement of imaging services across the network," said Jeffrey Mueller, MD, chair, AHN Department of Radiology and Imaging Services. “By investing in the latest technology, we are ensuring that our patients have access to outstanding care resources across our entire AHN footprint.”
The AHN Department of Radiology and Imaging Services recently completed a four-year effort to achieve Diagnostic Imaging Centers of Excellence (DICOE) designation for its 36 imaging facilities.
Considered the industry’s most distinguished recognition , DICOE designation identifies imaging programs that deliver the highest level of patient care, quality and radiation safety. Throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Delaware, AHN is the only health system to achieve this prestigious designation among adult imaging centers.
Starting Oct. 1, walk-in mammograms will be available at the AHN West Penn Hospital Imaging Center, as well as seven other AHN locations. Patients can schedule imaging services at AHN by appointment through MyChart or by calling (412) DOCTORS.
