Interventional cardiology

Using advanced imaging and diagnostic tools, our specialists can see how well blood is flowing through your heart and identify problems that may need treatment. These conditions include heart valve disease, carotid artery disease, and structural heart disease. Our heart specialists can treat many conditions with minimally invasive procedures instead of open surgery.

Cardiac electrophysiology

Our electrophysiologists diagnose and treat problems with the heart’s electrical system that can cause abnormal heart rhythms. Treatment may include procedures or devices, such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators.

Cardiovascular imaging

Advanced heart imaging gives our specialists a detailed look at your heart, so they can identify such conditions as stroke, carotid artery disease, stenosis, leaking valves, and structural heart disease. 

Cardiac surgery

Our heart surgeons perform procedures to repair or replace damaged heart valves and arteries. Care includes bypass surgery, carotid endarterectomy, and heart valve replacement, as well as minimally invasive options, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Vascular surgery

Our vascular specialists treat damaged or diseased blood vessels. Many procedures can be performed using minimally invasive catheter-based techniques, which may mean smaller incisions and an easier recovery.

Advanced heart care at Forbes Hospital

AHN continues to expand advanced cardiovascular care at Forbes Hospital, giving patients in eastern Allegheny County and surrounding communities greater access to specialized heart care close to home.

Newly renovated cardiac catheterization labs feature advanced technology that helps our specialists diagnose and treat heart conditions with greater precision. Forbes also offers an advanced electrophysiology lab and hybrid operating room, along with new postoperative recovery rooms.

The cardiac catheterization lab features the Philips Azurion¹ with FlexArm, an advanced X-ray imaging system that gives physicians detailed images of the heart while performing complex procedures.

The lab also includes a dedicated anesthesia workspace, allowing our specialists to perform more advanced procedures with full anesthesia support. These include WATCHMAN™ procedures, which can help reduce stroke risk for certain patients with atrial fibrillation.

Cardiac catheterization labs are also critical when every minute matters. Specialists use them to evaluate chest pain and stroke symptoms, find blocked coronary arteries, and perform procedures such as angioplasty and stent placement during a heart attack.

For emergency cases, Forbes Hospital’s cardiac catheterization team is available around the clock, with on-call staff able to mobilize within 30 minutes.
