According to the American Cancer Society, approximately one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.* Among those diagnosed with localized disease, the five-year relative survival rate is nearly 100% — a reflection of advancement in diagnostic imaging, therapeutic modalities, and early detection through routine screening.**

Urologists at AHN Cancer Institute offer preventive care for prostate cancer including Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests, among other leading-edge diagnostic and treatment options with an interdisciplinary approach.

Advanced screening tools for preventive care

AHN offers several advanced, minimally invasive diagnostic modalities including PSA blood tests, digital rectal exams (DREs), prostate needle biopsies or MRI, and CT, PET, and bone scans when needed.

AHN Urologist, Nasir Chaudry, MD, emphasizes that survival rates are highest before cancer has spread, so it’s never too early to get a second opinion or make a referral for additional screening if a patient’s tests are presenting abnormally.

“PSA values live on a spectrum,” said Dr. Chaudry. “A gradual rise over time can be normal, which is why routine screening is essential for establishing a baseline. When PSA levels increase rapidly and other potential causes have been excluded, we proceed with further testing to confirm or rule out malignancy.”

AHN urologists collaborate with patients and referring providers to assess individual risk factors, including family history, to develop a comprehensive understanding of each patient’s health profile.

Collaborative prostate cancer treatment at AHN

When prostate cancer is diagnosed, AHN specialists partner with patients and referring clinicians to develop individualized care plans. Patients have access to AHN urologists, radiation oncologists, and other subspecialists, ensuring the most effective and coordinated approach to care.

“Every diagnosis is unique,” said Dr. Chaudry. “Some patients may benefit from active surveillance, while others require immediate intervention. Our goal is to help each patient make an informed decision with confidence that a full team has reviewed their case.”

AHN offers advanced, minimally invasive, and targeted treatment options, including:

  • Innovative techniques, like high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).
  • Surgical options, like laparoscopic robotic-assisted surgery and cryosurgery.
  • Radiation therapy, like prostate brachytherapy, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
  • Medical oncology therapies, like chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy.

AHN Cancer Institute is the only radiation oncology program in western Pennsylvania with treatment centers accredited by both the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American College of Radiology, underscoring AHN’s commitment to quality, safety, and best practices. Patients may also benefit from access to clinical trials and investigational therapies through AHN’s research programs.
