Thank you for your interest in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital. Allegheny General Hospital has had a distinguished history in Cardiothoracic Surgery since the 1950s. George J. Magovern, Sr., MD, a pioneering physician who was widely recognized as one of the country’s foremost Cardiovascular surgeons, founded one of the earliest Thoracic Surgery Residency Programs in the country. Our highly regarded program and experienced faculty have upheld the foundations that the program was built on by often being the first in the region to offer cutting edge surgical techniques and procedures.
The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery includes the divisions of Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery. Our faculty is committed to providing a robust, highly skilled educational experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery. Our residents are given the opportunity to rotate amongst several cardiothoracic surgery faculty which enables exposure to a broad range of experience and teaching styles.
Currently we offer three training pathways in cardiothoracic surgery:
It is through one of these pathways that our graduates have pursued highly successful careers in both private and academic institutions across the country. Our commitment to developing our residents in all facets of their education is paramount to providing an excellent clinical education.
