This is a four-hour course designed to teach prehospital providers effective initial burn management. Participants will undergo a didactic teaching session where they will learn the proper evaluation and treatment techniques as well as effective transferring procedures. The participants will then have the opportunity to put these learned theories and skills into action through their participation in two simulated scenarios. Participants who successfully complete the course will earn a West Penn Burn Center patch for their jackets and also a certificate. This course fulfills four continuing education hours.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate a patient with a serious burn injury
  • Define the severity of the injury
  • Establish treatment priorities
  • Manage adequate ventilation
  • Initiate fluid resuscitation
  • Apply methods of physiologic monitoring
  • Determine if transfer is necessary
  • Conduct an inter-hospital transfer of a burn victim

Expected Outcomes

  • Initiate appropriate management of the burn injury patient in the first 24 hours
  • Successfully hand off the burn patient to a burn team
