Sleep Disorders Center at Jefferson Hospital

Sleep disorders do more than make you tired. Certain problems, such as sleep apnea, can interfere with breathing, which strains your heart. Specialists at the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Sleep Disorders Center at Jefferson Hospital use proven therapies to improve slumber and overall health.

What is sleep apnea?

People with sleep apnea experience momentary pauses in breathing while they sleep. This lack of oxygen is hard on your heart and puts you at risk for problems like heart arrhythmias. Learn more about sleep apnea.

Treating sleep apnea and sleep disorders at Jefferson Hospital: Why choose us?

As part of the AHN Center for Sleep Medicine, our board-certified sleep medicine specialists offer diagnostic services and treatments to help you get the healthful rest you need. You benefit from:

  • Sophisticated sleep lab: Our 8-bed sleep center is one of the region’s busiest. This high demand reflects our recognized expertise in treating all types of sleep disorders. We use the latest technologies to monitor brain and breathing activity while you rest comfortably in a private room. When appropriate, we help you conduct a sleep test at home. Learn more about diagnosing sleep disorders.
  • Advanced treatments: We're among a select few centers in the area implanting the Inspire® upper airway stimulator to treat sleep apnea. This device keeps the airway open while you sleep. Other therapies include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), medications, and dental devices. Your doctor will work with you to determine which sleep disorder treatment option is right for you.
  • Care for all types of sleep problems: We treat many types of sleep disorders, including restless leg syndrome, hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness), and parasomnia (abnormal behaviors like walking, eating, or acting aggressively while asleep). Read more about the types of sleep disorders we treat.
  • Wakefulness testing: We offer the maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) for people who work in transportation jobs that involve long periods of low activity. This test measures levels of alertness during times of quiet or inactivity. Employers often require the MWT for pilots and drivers of commercial trucks, buses, and taxicabs.
  • Sleep experts: Your care team includes physicians who completed additional sleep medicine fellowship training. These physicians collaborate with experts in dentistry, weight loss and bariatrics, behavioral health, and respiratory therapy.
