Joint Repair

If you have joint pain that won’t go away, you may feel your only choice is to give up the activities you love. At Allegheny Health Network (AHN), you’re not out of options.

We offer a wide range of sophisticated joint repair procedures. In addition to helping you get the relief you need, these procedures may delay or eliminate the need for joint replacement surgery.

Expert joint repair at AHN: Why choose us?

AHN is one of the few programs in western Pennsylvania with the expertise necessary to perform complex joint repair procedures. Nearly all of our orthopaedic surgeons are fellowship-trained, meaning they have completed focused training in areas such as foot and ankle problems.

We specialize in minimally invasive surgery, which uses the smallest necessary incision and sophisticated instruments. Our goal is to get you back on your feet sooner and help you resume your favorite activities quicker. Find out more about robotic and minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery.

Surgical joint repair treatments at AHN

Over time, wear and tear on your joints can make it painful to complete once-simple activities such as climbing stairs. Joint repair procedures fix the damaged portion of the joint, which may include restoring the cushioning between your bones for pain-free movements. These treatments are one of the many ways we care for people with arthritis.

Surgical joint repair procedures available at AHN include:

  • Arthroscopy: During this procedure, we examine the joint in ways that are not possible with imaging tests. We also make repairs such as fixing tears in your joint tissue and removing damaged cartilage. Find out more about arthroscopy.
  • Cartilage restoration: We use your own tissues (or donor tissues) to repair the cartilage within your knees. Depending on the extent of your cartilage damage, we may perform different procedures to repair your joint. Learn more about cartilage restoration.
  • Joint resurfacing: We replace the worn-out portion of the joint with a material that creates a smooth surface. This material forms a cushion between the moving parts of your joint, which helps eliminate pain.
  • Osteotomy: We slow the progression of joint damage by removing bone tissue or adding a wedge of bone from another area. Altering the structure of the joint in this way puts less pressure on the damaged area.
  • Synovectomy: If inflammation or excess tissue in the lining of the joints (synovium) is making it difficult to move, a synovectomy can help. We pinpoint the affected portion of the synovium and carefully remove it.
  • Fusion: If the joint damage is severe, a fusion helps you get lasting relief by preventing the bones of the aching joint from moving. During a fusion, we use special hardware to join bones together.
