For anyone who has been injured in a serious accident, advanced trauma care can mean the difference between temporary and permanent disability, or even life and death.
Allegheny Health Network’s trauma program is recognized among the nation’s best, giving patients a decided advantage for achieving the best possible outcomes. Our experienced, multidisciplinary team of trauma surgeons, specialists, nurses and support staff provides around-the-clock care for a wide array of blunt and penetrating injuries, such as car or motorcycle crashes, gunshots and stabbings, hangings, falls, near drowning, smoke inhalations and work-related accidents, as well as burns.
As a major referral center for western Pennsylvania, southeastern Ohio and northwestern West Virginia, our trauma programs treat more than 5,000 patients each year, helping to save many lives and restore a higher quality of life.
Here is why Allegheny Health Network is one of the most trusted names in trauma care:
Access to nationally accredited trauma and burn centers
Allegheny Health Network is home to three hospitals that provide specialized services for patients who have suffered serious or critical injuries:
- Allegheny General Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center, offering trauma surgery, surgical critical care and emergency general surgery, as well as a variety of research and educational programs.
- Forbes Hospital is a Level II Trauma Center that provides similar experienced medical services and resources but does not require the research and residency components of a Level 1 Trauma Center.
- West Penn Hospital is the only facility of its kind in the region with verification from both the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons for the treatment of both pediatric and adult burn patients.
Rapid response and care
We start to coordinate care before the patient reaches the hospital. LifeFlight, our aeromedical emergency transportation system, offers service within a 150-mile radius of Pittsburgh and provides regional emergency helicopter and critical care ground transportation services for critically ill and injured patients who need immediate specialized care. We also work with EMS providers to ensure that patients get immediate access to lifesaving care. Then we continue treatment at one of our trauma centers, where a board-certified trauma surgeon is on call 24/7 to handle new admissions and meet the needs of our admitted patients.
Nationally recognized experts
Our trauma team includes fellowship-trained trauma/acute care surgeons who are often among the first in the region and the nation to offer the latest techniques and technologies. In addition, our team includes a group of experienced physician assistants, general surgery residents and many consulting, collaborative services, such as neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, oral maxillofacial surgery and ophthalmology.
A full array of support services
While trauma specialists are providing direct care to the patient, a multidisciplinary team of staff are working behind the scenes to deliver essential supportive services. Case managers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychology specialists, substance abuse counselors, violence intervention counselors, nutritionists, social workers, pastoral care staff and many others help to ensure that the physical and psychological needs of each patient—as well as family members—are being met.
