KidShape© is a pediatric weight management program for youth between 6-14 years old. It meets one night a week for nine weeks, from 6-8pm. Each weekly session includes nutrition, behavior modification discussion, adult education and physical activity. Families are given hands-on lesson from a registered dietician on good nutrition and healthy eating, such as how to make healthy after school snacks and how to make healthy choices when eating out. Discussion groups focus on changing eating behaviors and are led by a mental health professional. Each week a different physical activity is taught by a certified fitness professional to promote physical activity as fun and noncompetitive for the whole family.
The program is family-based and at least one parent or guardian is required to attend with the student. Brothers and sisters are welcome to attend. The more family support a child has, the more successful that child will be with weight management.
The goal of the KidShape© program is to promote healthy lifestyles and does not focus on weight directly, however the kids do lose weight. Eighty-seven percent of the students enrolled lose weight within the first 9 weeks of the program. Approximately 80% of the students keep the weight off 1 to 2 years after they have completed the program. Parents/guardians have also reported weight loss and often better control of their own illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.
Enrollment is open to all families regardless of insurance coverage. (Families do not have to have health insurance to participate in the program.) At this time, a $10.00 registration fee is required of each family (regardless of insurance coverage) to secure a spot in the upcoming program. The registration fee is paid to the site and is returned if families attend 7 out of 9 sessions.
An initiative of the AGH Northside Partnership. KidShape© is sponsored by the Highmark Foundation.
